What is the Best Moisturizer for Dry Skin?

Question Answered By Susan - Face & Skin Advisor
Question: Hi. I have very dry skin and was wondering what your thoughts are on the best moisturizer? Why is it difficult for people with dry skin to find a good moisturizer? -Kris from Ohio

Answer: Hi Kris. This is Susan. I’m the face and skin advisor at ellensbeauty.com. Simply put, the best moisturizer for someone with dry skin will have certain water holding ingredients as well as oil that helps prevent loss of moisture from evaporation. You need your skin to hold in the water if you want it to look young and healthy.

People with dry skin may have difficulty finding the right moisturizer due to the fact that most over the counter moisturizers don’t include sufficient quantities of the ingredients I talked about…or may not include them at all! So what specifically are these ingredients you should look for? The most effective include lanolin, AHA’s (Alpha Hydroxy Acids), and sodium hyaluronate. These ingredients work together to draw in and keep water deep inside the layers of your skin.

Now that you’ve got something to take in the moisture, you need different oils to keep it in. Oils can produce a protective layer on your skin that helps prevent evaporation. Your skin naturally produces some of these oils, but sometimes it can’t produce enough to keep your skin from drying out. If you lack sufficient amounts of these ingredients and oils, it can lead to dry skin.

Some examples of these essential oils include extra virgin coconut oil, canola oil, extra virgin olive oil, jojoba oil, and shea butter. When treating dry skin, it’s important to avoid petrolatum products such as Vaseline and petroleum jelly as they may cause an unpleasant stinging sensation on some people with sensitive skin, which may indicate a mild allergic reaction. The less refined these natural oils are, the better they tend to work on people with dry skin. So try to find less refined oils when looking at moisturizing products.

As for specific product recommendations, I find that many people with dry skin choose to go with one of the following products:

Dr. Hauschka’s Rose Day Cream Light
Eucerin Daily Replenishing Lotion
Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream
Este Lauder Facial Moisturizers
Glytone Face Cream
